Background of the Study
Digital communication in Lagos has rapidly transformed traditional language use, and Yoruba speakers are adapting their politeness strategies to fit online platforms. In digital forums, social media, and messaging apps, Yoruba pragmatic markers—such as honorifics, respectful greetings, and indirect requests—are often modified or abbreviated to suit the informal and fast-paced nature of online interaction (Olu, 2023). This shift has led to the emergence of new digital politeness conventions that blend traditional values with modern communication efficiency. While these adaptations facilitate quick exchanges and a broader reach, they also risk diluting the nuanced cultural meanings embedded in traditional politeness strategies. The study examines how Yoruba speakers in Lagos navigate politeness in digital communication, investigating the use of pragmatic markers and the impact of digital media on traditional language etiquette. Data will be collected through analysis of online conversations, surveys, and interviews with digital users, aiming to evaluate the balance between cultural preservation and modern convenience in Yoruba online discourse.

Statement of the Problem
Traditional Yoruba politeness strategies are under transformation in the digital age, particularly among Lagos residents. The shift to digital communication may compromise the culturally rich pragmatic markers that traditionally signal respect and deference (Olu, 2023). The emergence of abbreviated forms and emoticons could lead to misunderstandings and a loss of nuanced meaning. Limited research has been conducted on how digital platforms affect these politeness strategies, creating a gap in understanding their evolution and impact on effective communication (Akinola, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To identify changes in Yoruba politeness strategies online.

  • To evaluate the impact of digital communication on traditional pragmatic markers.

  • To propose strategies for preserving cultural politeness in digital contexts.

Research Questions

  • How are Yoruba politeness strategies adapted in digital communication?

  • What are the effects of digital media on traditional pragmatic markers?

  • How can cultural nuances be preserved online?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the pragmatic aspects of politeness in Yoruba digital communication, offering insights into how traditional values can be maintained in modern contexts. The findings will benefit digital communication experts, educators, and cultural custodians by suggesting ways to balance efficiency with cultural authenticity (Olu, 2023; Akinola, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Yoruba digital communication in Lagos and does not include offline interactions or other language varieties.

Definitions of Terms

  • Politeness Strategies: Linguistic methods used to express respect.

  • Digital Communication: Interaction via online platforms.

  • Yoruba: The indigenous language of the Yoruba people.
